The reams of job listings are piling up, and I am scrambling to look for any that contain requirements that I can accommodate. I have a lot of experience in communications work but find many of the postings overwhelm my job search skills by asking for more than I have. This can be stressful, and I tend to get distracted by negativity. To remedy this, I have been using four techniques to put it all in perspective.

Person Writing with a Pen

Owning my Job Search

One thing I am doing is to not make the world of work my identity. I begin to think of the search as a process that is in my control, something I can use to optimize my chances of finding purposeful, enjoyable employment. Just remembering that I am the author of my own story, and that I can use this time to exercise a creative force. I can choose the types of listings I want to emphasize. Ultimately, my job search and choice of work is up to me. This is empowering!

Knowing my Skill Set

Secondly, I can also apply to job postings that ask for skills that I don’t necessarily possess, but that I can learn. Some employers are willing to train people in what they are lacking while they capitalize on the strengths a person brings with them. I have started applying to all jobs that appeal to me, especially mission-driven jobs, regardless of whether I possess all the requirements. The takeaway is to apply to what you would enjoy!

Mindfulness

A third technique I use is to set up a practice of doing five mindful minutes every hour to just be present in my surroundings, letting whatever I am thinking about just float by in my mind, but not taking it too seriously. I allow myself a mental break, just watch my thoughts, and then let them go. Then, after letting any concerns and worry dissipate, I reflect on what I was thinking about during my job search and focus on what actions I can take to remedy the situation. I consider this a key life and job search skill!

Life Balance to Enhance Job Search Skills

Lastly, I always take time to do things during the day that are fulfilling, things that help me to remember that I don’t have to be stressed out while I am seeking employment. In the current social climate, it can be hard to do something just for fun and not spend too much time scrolling through the news and social feeds. I still have interests, after all. To maintain balance and cope with uncertainty, I take time to write, to process my thoughts and experiences. I take photographs of nature, and I cook healthy food.

I am beginning to see my life as a blank canvas, a place that is ready for me to create my own picture and story.

Here’s to health and wellbeing!
